about

Arriving in adulthood is a bitter-sweet experience. Abandoned childhood fascinations make way for tough life lessons. But also the hope and potential that comes with taking charge – of both your life and other’s.

These are the central themes in Nowadays, the second full-length album from Palace Winter. Copenhagen based Australian singer-songwriter Carl Coleman and Danish producer and classically trained pianist Caspar Hesselager have built on their dynamic relationship to create an album that swells between tender ballads and high-energy melodies.

Built around floating keys, rhythm guitar and an insisting beat, they forge a bright and gloomy album that further develops the group’s unique sound, which has so far won them international plaudits from BBC 6 Music, NME and The Guardian, as well as Gaffa in Denmark, where they are based.

It opens with “Birth”, a mellow track whose minor key synths invite you into the duo’s atmospheric and melancholic universe. This is reinforced by the following number “Take Shelter”, a choral death ballad about confronting grief and coping with loss.

Fans of Palace Winter’s energetic live shows won’t be disappointed by the “The Ballroom”, the tale of a narcissistic and evil rock singer. Its vigour is reminiscent of the ecstatic “Positron” from their 2016 album Waiting for the World to Turn – songs that need to be played driving into the sunset with the windows rolled down as the world behind you burns.

Their 80s influence shines through on “Empire”, and “Come Back (Left Behind)”, whose bright notes contrast with lyrics that dwell on the challenges of anxiety, and coming to terms with the loss of a lover and feeling like you’ll never escape the fog of grief.

The album continues its exploration of deeply human themes in “Baltimore” (the experience of a suffocating love), “The Accident” (the realisation that life isn’t as bad as it seems), “Demon” (overcoming self-doubt and fear) and “Acting Like Lovers” (how sharing a traumatic experience can bring people closer).

Coleman lifts the distortion on his vocals for the final track “Kenopsia”, an eerie duet with Hesselager’s keys. It’s echoey reverberations appear to bounce within an enormous space that the two can’t fill – it’s full of soul and spectral emptiness.

Nowadays mulls over the challenges we face just trying to be alive in the present moment in a world full of distraction. You can’t swipe your way to happiness – you have to lift your eyes first.

Track Name: Take Shelter
In my mind it's all the way things were
I remember how the family heard
they told them everything in the house had burned
and all that's left will slowly fade to the earth
In my mind it's all the way things were
I remember how the family heard
And every night the fearful dreams emerge
she takes her shelter like a flightless bird
A life worth living? “I don’t know”
a wolf gone hiding in the snow
a love worth killing just to show
just what it is to let it go
just what it is to let him go
In my mind it's all the way things were
I remember how the family heard
they told them everything in the house had burned
and all that's left will slowly fade to the earth
she lay down with him there for weeks
she heard his body start to creak
and when he turned to her to speak
that’s when he knew his time had peaked
that’s when he knew their time had peaked
In my mind it's all the way things were
I remember how the family heard
they told them everything in the house had burned
and all that's left will slowly fade to the earth
In my mind it's all the way things were
I remember how the family heard
And every night the fearful dreams emerge
she takes her shelter like a flightless bird
Track Name: The Ballroom
He staggers out to the silent crowd
Scornfully, grudgingly
hiding nothing he howls out loud
forcefully, and all they see
is farcical
You know that he will always be
This Radical
Forever gonna be like me
An Animal
You're all I see, when everything just fades
Later on as the party dies
he dwells in smoke, the show’s a joke
the women flicker their glassy eyes
all he wants, is this shame revoked
it’s tragical
You know that he will always be
This Radical
Forever gonna be like me
An Animal
You're all I see when everything just fades
And next to me, you'll come to feel the same
Track Name: Empire
The Animal in me, died tonight
thought I'd never be, crying like a parasite
Before it gets too late, I’ll deny the pain
stranger now to me, but tonight you will believe
Tonight I’m gonna leave it
Every little secret
Never to believe it
Walking on a ceiling
Waiting on a feeling
Running from a notion
Breathing in fresh air, see beyond the glare
Killing empathy, when it makes sense to me
Panic comes around, never coming down
Forever calling me, and I’m hiding like a beast
Tonight I’m gonna leave it
Every little secret
Never to believe it
Walking on a ceiling
Waiting on a feeling
Running from a notion
Before it gets too late, you will find escape.
Voices calling me, like the lightning through the breeze.
Tonight I’m gonna leave it
Every little secret
Never to believe it
Walking on a ceiling
Waiting on a feeling
Running from a notion
Track Name: Baltimore
We’re all violent rivers now but there’s only one way to flow
I wanna be there when you call but I’m afraid I’ll never let you go
We were walking through the town, the people on the weekend slow
I couldn’t understand just why I was feeling like I might implode
A life lived moving in reverse is strange
It’s like I’m always looking back these days
Waiting for a reason
Looking forward now I’m sure you’ll stay with me
We sat down at the library stairs I could feel it crawling up my spine
I couldn’t recognize myself, I could tell we didn’t have much time
You were playing with your hair, I thought I might burst out and cry
I straightened up I was breathing deep you were smiling as you walked inside
A life lived moving in reverse is strange
It’s like I’m always looking back these days
Waiting for a reason
Looking forward now I’m sure you’ll stay with me
Everything is in reverse, a mirror showing you the curse again
I’ll always be indifferent, this monumental sympathy instead
Everything is in reverse, like a mirror, the curse again
Track Name: Come Back (Left Behind)
You were waiting in the woods, you spoke to me
Left you everything I could, you followed me
Found you hanging on the line, tangled up in poison twine
Left you laying on the stone, now haunting me
Following darkness, never moving slow
We saw it stirring, waiting down below
Radiant and vulnerable like a jewel beneath the snow
Hiding from something in the burning afterglow
You look different in my dreams, come back to me
Nothing's ever as it seems, for you and me
No more driving to the coast, no more searching for your ghost
Forever drifting out to sea, come back to me
Following darkness, never moving slow
We saw it stirring, waiting down below
Radiant and vulnerable like a jewel beneath the snow
Hiding from something in the burning afterglow
Come back to me
Track Name: The Accident
I believe in you, but just not me
You’re all I see
Now you silently wait, patiently
Calling me
Nowadays you feel your age
will you forgive me again?
Catch the rage, on every page
This moments not the time, it’s just your state of mind
The ambulance arrived, just in time
There’s a light I see
The neighbours watched you cry, “he will be fine”
You’re all I see
Nowadays you feel your age
I hear the sirens sound
Catch the rage, on every page
Just stop and look around, uncover what you’ve found
Track Name: Demon
It’s like a demon cutting through
All of the voices telling you
Open the window fill the room
The sunlight streaming into you
Follow the leader, follow through
Never believe what they’re telling you
Now I come as the the living proof
Never gonna be like them, always running from lament
and all of the things you want, will never come to you again
Never gonna be like them, always running away from
All I want, never gonna have it
All I want, never gonna have it all
Is he getting ready now for you?
Hearts getting heavy pushing through
All of the things you see him do
That I’m not gonna live up to
Follow the leader, follow through
Show him the beast you turn into
Now I come as the living the proof
Never gonna be like them, always running away lament
And all of the things you want, will never come to you again
Never gonna be like them, always drowning in your torment
And all of things I’ve learned forever burning until the end
Track Name: Acting Like Lovers
We’ve gotta leave it all behind
You can run but you’ll never make it out alive
“Hurry up we’re running out of time”
They were listening through the wall on the other side
I’m standing in the violent morning light
Maybe I’ll finally get some sleep tonight?
Waiting in the motel when you called
“get your things ‘cause we’re leaving with the kids tonight”
Felt like I was climbing up the walls.
“A thousand miles if we drive, I think I saw the sign”
I’m not a criminal like they all say
But I would do anything to keep you safe
All I ever thought I’d need was standing right in front of me
Fades into the morning sound of waves
Questioning the ‘Man’ in me will tell you what you’ve always seen
before you turn the other way
Hiding all the obvious again
“You left the kids on their own by the swimming pool?”
We acted like lovers till the end
“I know you’re scared but we promised not to break the rules”
Street lights flick on, that time of night again
She’s talking ‘cause she’s nervous to pretend.
All I ever thought I’d need was standing right in front of me
fades into the morning sound of waves
Questioning the ‘Man’ in me will tell you what you’ve always seen
before you turn the other way
Track Name: Kenopsia
In the silence when I awake
The shadows dance across her skin
And though I’ve never seen your face
You’re reaching out to me from within
All my enemies will be tamed this time
There’s only you and me, my love not worthy
All my memories will erase in time
It’s all that I can be, my love not worthy
